www.waaytv.com/global/story.aspBOAZ, Ala. (WAAY) -- Cleanup crews at some Tennessee Valley colleges have warned students and staff about potential health risks at their gyms after hundreds of evacuees came to north Alabama to escape Hurricane Gustav. With old food, used toiletries, dirty blankets, the gymnasium at Snead State Community College was trashed Tuesday. About 300 hurricane evacuees had called the home for four days last week.
Within 10 minutes of arriving at the facility, school officials asked WAAY-31 News to leave. However, during the brief time the reporter was there, a syringe, a condom and used underwear were plainly visible. School officials said that when the evacuees heard they were leaving, they left behind a big mess.
"There's just a lot to consider with the cleanup," said Snead State spokeswoman Shelley Smith. "We want to take everything into consideration. That's why we've brought in professionals that've done this before." Tuberculosis, staph infections and hepatitis are just some of the health diseases that may be lurking inside the gym. Megan Reynolds is on the women's basketball team, which will condition outside and not on their home court for the next few days. "It's affecting all of the college athletes," Reynolds said. "Because volleyball is practicing at a high school, they have to drive 45 miles. We're practicing in a smaller gym, so we can't really run. And the guys are practicing wherever they can." The moves are just a temporary solution until the gym is all cleaned up. But looking around on Tuesday, it won't be easy. Snead State isn't alone. There are reports of similar problems at other Alabama colleges as well. It will cost about $20,000 to clean up the Snead State gymnasium. School officials said the Federal Emergency Management Agency will foot the bill.

I'm going to try and get this thing up and running again, no promises though. I actually forgot the last time I updated and am too lazy to go back an look so I'll start in December of 2007. I graduated in mid-December already having a job in a Central Texas school district as an 8th grade science teacher. I began after the Christmas break. That half year was a great challenge but well worth it. I am currently still at that district getting ready to start my second year in the same position. The last week i have spent setting up a new classroom and lab, they are refurbing my old building and hopefully will have a full science lab/classroom ready for me to move in over the Christmas break. This school is relatively small and I wasn't given much support last year, this year they have hired a third science teacher that hopefully will be a great resource for me. She's going to help me with curriculum and style development while I get her worked into the district. I lucked out and my neighbor teacher has been here for a while and is a coach, which means he knows everybody so he fit me in nicely. Last year I commuted about an hour each way to work, this year I have moved to the town of my district. It's going to be a bit of a change but I still plan on being in Austin as much as I can on the weekends. I have a nice duplex and the people who live in the other half own one of the restuarants in town. I needed a few things for my place and sent out a school wide email and had many responses and the people wouldn't let me pay for anything, I think this is going to be a great place to be for a while. I do not have internet or cable hooked up in my new house yet so I've been hanging out at the local Starbucks an hour or so every night catching up on the outside world. Future plans as of now include getting the house settled into and getting off to a great year, I'm really looking forward to it. Beyond that I'm planning on getting started on my master's degree within a year or so. As of right now I've settled on something in the Educational/Instructional Technology area and tacking on a Mid-Management plan (that's what you need to become a Principal and many other positions above the classroom teacher level). I think I want to stay in the classroom for at least five years though, maybe for the rest of my career. During my masters program I will continue to teach full time, I've found a few programs that I can do either fully online or only go in during the summers/weeknds or a night a week. That feels like it for right now. I'm not usually one to throw parties, but this feels like the first 'real' place I've lived outside of my parents that I MIGHT get something together, although it is a bit of a drive from the big city. Now, for those of you who made it rhtough that I have an interesting story from today to reward you with. The afformentioned teacher/coach had an interesting conversation with a new student's mother today. They have just moved into the area for a very large Texas city. When Coach asked her why they moved she said it was because his old school was 'gay'. We both found that interesting. Glad he's going to have that kid and not myself. Much love to all, kieser Tags: update, work

This week I have officially been hired as a teacher. The job is 8th grade science in Marble Falls, which is Northwest of Austin and about 45 minutes away from Cedar Park. I was planning on looking for any job I could find teaching in the San Marcos area for this coming January and then spending the summer looking for a 'real' job, but this happens to be a position I was really looking for and it worked out that I got it, nice. They wanted me to start on December 10th, just one weekend after finishing my student teaching. I told them I could be there a few days that week but not the entire time because I need to wrap some things up in San Marcos but will be there the entire week of the 17th. I'm sure I'll know more next week. Graduation is on the 14th at 6pm. I sent out invitations today. Don't be offended if you don't get one, they are surprisingly expensive, and you are all welcome to come, let me know if you want more details. Hopefully I'll have time to figure out some way to have a party at some point, but right now I've got more important things to consider. In related news I'll be moving soon, I'm going to stay with my parents for a while while i get loose ends tied up here in San Marcos and probably start looking for something in the Lago Vista area. I don't want to live in Marble Falls because I already run into a lot of my students here in SM and know that in MF, being a smaller community I would run into them everywhere. Plus Lago Vista is a nice middle point where I have a short commute into Austin to hang out with friends and a short commute to MF for work. My parents bought me a new laptop for graduation. It should be here Tuesday or Wednesday and I'm really looking forward to it. The old beast BJ gave me has held up wonderfully but it's time for an upgrade. My grandparents are coming in for the graduation and staying through Christmas and I'm excited to see them. It's been over a year and a half now. I'm a little sad about leaving SM there are a few people I will miss dearly and many that I'll remember.
